In 1996 over dinner at the Canyon Club in Newport Beach, my great uncle told me the story of several wealthy men and their failures. This story healed my financial trauma.

A little background. I have always been a very motivated soul. I graduated from engineering school at age 22 and started working in aerospace in Southern California.

I quickly learned that my paycheck was the same every week. To get ahead I needed an investment side hustle.

Real estate investment seemed like a good side job with lots of upside potential. In 1986, at age 23, I bought my first property. A duplex in Redondo Beach. I won’t go into the details, but this was a huge challenge being so young. The real estate market had started to take off and it wasn’t easy to secure a property.

After closing escrow, I felt on top of the world. I was on my way to making my first million!
